Isle of Mull, Scotland

What started as a curiosity lead to a desire to investigate the beauty of the island of Mull. The Isle of Mull is part of the Inner Hebrides found off the coast of Scotland.  A truly wondrous and intact place when it comes to nature and geology.  The season chosen for this adventure  was winter, which may to most seem odd.  However at this time a year the landscape shows another form - Its raw and true soul mapped upon the rock against the ocean. An opportunity as a photographer to discover and to be discovered.  In fact all the locations visited in this work,  no one was met or even seen from a distance - This is wilderness.  Each day required hiking between 6 to 8 hours back and forth along the island’s rugged coast.  An exciting journey dictated by the elements; the weather and the timing of tides.

The rock formations on Carsaig, Burg and Ardtun are of tens of millions of years. Formed by the cooling of lava to create these giant  dark polygon structures. These tall, laid out or twisted  marvels are found in  rock faces, coastline, cliffs and walls.  While the island’s other textures, lines and shapes are untouched and seem to be ever lasting. There is a definite sense and mystery holding all the pieces of the land and sea together to create a place that seems to be unordered but not.
